The Code of Life: Extracting Strawberry DNA

Ages 3–9

Key Insight

DNA is stored in the nucleus of cells. By breaking cell walls with soap and salt, and using alcohol to precipitate, we can visualize DNA strands.

📖 Explanation

🧒 For Ages 3-5 (Simple Words)

Inside every fruit is a secret instruction book that says 'Be a Strawberry!' We are going to peek at the tiny threads of that secret book.🍓

🎒 For Ages 6-9 (Science Talk)

Lysis and Precipitation

To see DNA, we must perform Lysis (breaking the cell). Dish soap breaks down the fatty cell membranes. Then, we add cold alcohol. DNA doesn't dissolve in alcohol, so it 'precipitates' (clumps together) into white, cloudy strings that we can see.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does all DNA look the same?
To the naked eye, yes! Whether it's from a human or a strawberry, extracted DNA looks like white, gooey fibers.

Step 1 / 2

🧪 The DNA Extraction

~40 min

Pull the real fibers of life from a fruit.

🛒 Supplies

📋 Steps

  1. 1

    🍓 Squish and Soap

Mash a strawberry in a bag with soap and salt. This breaks the cells open.

  2. 2

    🧪 The Alcohol Trick

Pour ice-cold isopropyl alcohol on top. Watch the white 'ghostly' strings of DNA float to the surface!
